The Cemetery of Isca Sullo Ionio
The Cemetery of Isca was built and officially inaugurated in January
1883. This fairly small cemetery sits high above the road, just before
the entrance of the town. The first person to be buried there was a
four month old child, Rosa M. Mannello, daughter of Rosario.
Different from American Cemeteries, where you can search for
ancestors and view 300 year old grave stones and get a wealth of
family info, here most older burials are eventually removed, unless a
family owns a tomb. While walking through the cemetery, you will
notice most of the burials are from the past 50 years only, so finding
your Great, Great Grand Parents burial from the 1800's, will not
happen. The good news though, City Hall does have your ancestors
death records. For the burials that are located in the cemetery, I will
record all of the burial records on my trip in August 2006.
Birth, Marriage and Death Records- Isca Sullo Ionio
On my last trip to Isca, in August 2004, I decided to visit City Hall and attempt to trace my wife's family
history.  It was a Genealogists dream, all of the record books dating back into the 1700's were fully intact
and well organized. Which is quite amazing, considering the many  destructive Earthquakes, that have
pounded this village many times since the 1600's. There in a closet, were three rows of records books,
including every year and indexed by  family name. This is unbelievable, I thought to myself. Within a short
time, we easily traced  her ancestry back 8 generations, before our time ran out. Birth, Marriage and Death
Records, all there. The records clerk was very nice and helpful in our search, she knew her books and how to
seek out the info we were looking for. If you are going to visit City Hall to do search, here are a few things to
remember. Speaking Italian or going with someone who does, would be a huge plus. Do not ask to see the
books, the town will not allow you to look at them. You are required to stand behind a counter and the clerk
will do the searching for you from her desk, five feet away. They will "not" make photo copies of pages, due
to the age and fragile nature of these original handwritten books. Be prepared, do not waste her time, arrive
with family names and dates in hand, to start your initial search. Try to visit in the morning hours from 9-11 am
or after 3:30 pm. You are occupying the time of this person, who has many other duties waiting for her, try to
keep your visit under 30 minutes. If many searches are needed, consider leaving a written request and a self
addressed envelope. While they may or may not require payment, consider making a donation to the town,
for the services. If you decide to send a letter requesting family info, have it written in Italian and again I would
consider sending a donation to the town, for services.  Here is the Address: Piazza Municipio, 88060 Isca
Sullo Ionio, (CZ) Italia.
